How to run HAA's monthly rebalance step by step (checklist)

Practice · 6 min

A tactical strategy only works if it is executed with discipline. This is the monthly routine, about 10-15 minutes.

Before you start (once only)

  1. Choose your broker, comparing fees, the ETFs available and the minimum per order.
  2. Define your ETF for each asset in the strategy and note them in a sheet with the ticker and ISIN.
  3. Decide your capital and check the tax impact in your country.
  4. Set up a trade log (date, product, shares, price, commission). You will need it for your tax return.

Every month

1. Wait for the month-end close

The signal is calculated with the close of the last business day of the month. Check the site from the first business day after (it updates each month with the final close).

2. Read the signal

On the strategy sheet you will see the target portfolio. HAA Balanced's current state: defensive mode (everything to the safe asset) with BIL 100% (close of September 30, 2026).

3. Map it to your products

Swap each ticker for the product you actually hold. If you change any product, note it down.

4. Work out the orders

Use the rebalancing calculator: enter the price and the shares you hold, and it will tell you how many to buy and sell.

5. Trade sensibly

  • Use limit orders on thinly traded ETFs.
  • Avoid the market open and close if the ETF has wide spreads.
  • Sell first, then buy, unless you have enough cash.

6. Record and file

Keep the confirmation and update your sheet. If you sell at a loss, note the date so you can track wash-sale-type rules where they apply.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping an uncomfortable signal. If the signal takes you out of the market just before a rise, you will be tempted to ignore it. If you are going to ignore it, do not follow the strategy.
  • Changing the rules halfway. Any adjustment invalidates the backtest.
  • Trading tiny amounts. Rebalances of 1-2% cost more in commissions than they add; define a minimum threshold (for example, ignore differences below 5% of the target weight) and always apply it the same way.
  • Forgetting taxes. Check how your country taxes gains before selling with large profits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to trade right at the close?

Backtests assume execution at the close, but in practice it is usual to trade the next day. The result will be slightly different.

What do I do if my broker does not have an ETF on the list?

Replace it with the closest one (same index or asset class) and accept that your real portfolio will differ from the backtest's.

How much money does it make sense to follow it with?

It depends on commissions. If you pay a minimum of $3-5 per order and move 4 ETFs a month, with small portfolios commissions will be a major drag. Work out your cost with the calculator.
